Exploring Small, Modular Nuclear Power as Future Energy Resource
Small scale, modular nuclear power is one of many emerging technologies that PNGC
Power, along with other Northwest utilities, is tracking. One investor-owned utility
and nine public power utilities are working with Energy Northwest to study the feasibility
of modular nuclear reactor technology for future baseload generation. The study
group is not making a commitment to the technology, but will be looking into costs,
different design options and other issues.
This technology offers the benefit of carbon-free baseload generation. Also, small,
modular reactors could be a good option for Northwest utilities looking to add power
– and costs – incrementally. PNGC’s participation in the feasibility study will
provide long-range planning information.
Since PNGC is already carefully exploring the best potential match for members regarding
wind, small hydro, biomass, geothermal, wave energy, combustion turbines and landfill
gas – it makes sense to investigate the emerging technology that small modular represents.
Small modular nuclear power fits right in with several other resources we are tracking
that are new and emerging such as wave energy, which is further along.
Over the past 30 years, much has changed in nuclear power operations: design, safety,
technology and funding options. Nuclear power today is not what it was three decades
ago. Nuclear power is part of the diverse mix of energy resource studied as part
of a responsible exploration of options to meet future member needs.
There is no timeline set for the feasibility study. The group will determine the
aspects they will research, which will drive the length of time the feasibility
project will take. It’s too early to tell if new nuclear construction will be pursued,
but participating in this project is part of our effort to explore possibilities
for affordable, environmentally responsible baseload or full-time energy options.
