Coffin Butte Resource Project, Landfill-Gas-to-Energy Plant, More Than Doubles Generation Capacity
Capacity expansion complete; operations set to begin October 1
Portland, Oregon - 09/28/2007 - October 1 marks the start of operations of the capacity expansion of the Coffin Butte Resource Project, generating renewable electricity from landfill gas. The original plant has been in operation since October 1, 1995 and is located just north of Corvallis, Oregon. Gas is collected from the neighboring landfill, owned by Valley Landfills, Inc. The gas is used to fuel internal combustion engines. The engines drive generators that produce electricity for about 4,000 households.
This resource is a superior, cost-effective renewable. For the last 10 years, the Coffin Butte Resource Project has produced energy 97 percent of the time (in contrast to wind, which produces energy 30 to 35 percent of the time). The project has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one of the most efficient plants in the country.
The capacity expansion, underway for the past year, added two 20-cylinder engines. The total generating capacity has increased from 2.5 megawatts to 5.66 megawatts, enough to power 4,000 homes. Every kilowatt-hour of energy generated by the Coffin Butte Resource Project means one less kilowatt-hour potentially generated by fossil-fueled power plants.
