PNGC Power Capitalizes on Opportunity with New Power Supply Contracts
In the works for years, cost-effective resources are the focus
Portland, Oregon - 11/17/2008 -
Today PNGC Power announced that new long-term power supply contracts have been signed by 13 Northwest electricity cooperatives, continuing their PNGC membership. The contracts culminate work that has been underway for years and focuses on providing an efficient and cost-effective power supply pool for future operations to benefit members. PNGC is a Portland-based generation and transmission cooperative owned by Northwest electric distribution cooperative utilities that have service territory in seven western
states. Backed by member-owner assets, the company is well-positioned for the major shift in the way the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) provides wholesale power post 2011.
"PNGC Power will acquire member-selected resources at the lowest cost possible to meet the combined load requirements of its member-owners above their BPA entitlements," said John Prescott, PNGC Power President & CEO. "The company is able to optimize power deliveries to members using its unique status as a Joint Operating Entity, established through federal legislation in 1999 and benefiting Northwest consumer-owned utilities by enabling them to jointly purchase power at wholesale from BPA."
According to Rick Crinklaw, Chairman of PNGC Power's Board of Directors and General Manager of Lane Electric Cooperative (Eugene, Oregon), "We have secured our share of the region's low-cost hydro power resource for several decades to come. PNGC has clearly emerged as a vehicle for success and is well-positioned to provide cost-effective resources for our member-owners."
New contract signers include: Blachly-Lane Electric Cooperative (Eugene, Oregon); Central Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Redmond, Oregon); Clearwater Power Company (Lewiston, Idaho); Consumers Power Inc. (Philomath, Oregon ); Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Port Orford, Oregon); Douglas Electric Cooperative (Roseburg, Oregon); Fall River Rural Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Ashton, Idaho); Lane Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Eugene, Oregon); Northern Lights, Inc. (Sagle, Idaho); Okanogan County Electric Cooperative,
Inc. (Winthrop, Washington): Raft River Rural Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Malta, Idaho); Umatilla Electric Cooperative (Hermiston, Oregon); and West Oregon Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Vernonia, Oregon).
The company's existing members retain decision-making roles under their pre-existing contracts which extend to September 30, 2011. PNGC Power has fostered open communications, provided multiple opportunities for involvement by decision-makers of distribution cooperative utilities in the region and has conducted an open process getting input from current and potential member cooperatives.
