Portland, Oregon – October 9, 2024 – The Brattle Group, in concert with a group of Pacific Northwest energy industry stakeholders including PNGC, released the results of their Day-Ahead Market Participation Study Extension today. The study attempts to quantify the financial benefits associated with Bonneville Power Administration participation in either of the two proposed Day-Ahead Market providers.
This study is the latest in a growing series of evaluations led by Brattle that seeks to incorporate as much available balancing authority data as possible to evaluate one element of the important day-ahead market decision facing western utilities.
“PNGC Power is pleased to support additional information for the broader region during this important moment for our shared electric grid,” said PNGC CEO Jessica Matlock. “While these results represent a key piece to the puzzle, we must also recognize the critical importance that market governance plays in these discussions and cannot be quantified in results like these.”
The Bonneville Power Administration is expected to render a final decision on their Day-Ahead Market selection in May. That decision should weigh the implications of system footprint benefits like those studied by Brattle and other recent studies against significant concerns with the existing governance associated with the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) and their Extended-Day Ahead Market (EDAM) offering.
